The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Prof. Charles Esimone yesterday said he had set up a management committee to address the current unrest in the school occasioned by an alleged increase in fees.
The students had, on Monday, staged a peaceful protest over the alleged fee hike.
The protesters, who bore placards with varying inscriptions, had blocked portion of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, insisting on reversal of the fees.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Fedrick Odibo, who addressed the students on behalf of the V-C had during the protest, assured them of a meeting with the V-C on return.
Speaking to the protesting students on Tuesday, Esimone assured them that all their legitimate complaints would be addressed, promising to get back to them within 24 hours.
He said: “My children that can’t be deceived or disgraced, I’ve listened to your cry. With all sense of humility, I empathise and fully understand the hardship, suffering and emotional turmoil you’re passing through.
“I’ve seen your placards. I agree with all you’ve said. I’ve come to address you as your father. I assure you that all your legitimate complaints from A-Z will be reviewed and addressed.
“I’ve set up a management committee that will meet with your representative. But you have to choose among yourselves representatives for the negotiations within 24 hours.”
